Free SEO Tools (2021 Edition)

Let’s say you’re on a budget or you’re running a free, preliminary SEO audit for a client and you can’t afford to spend your premium credits.

Luckily, there’s plenty of free SEO tools or premium SEO tools with free trials or free daily credits.

Unfortunately, there’s too many to know which one will help and which one will add more confusion both for you and your client.

Here’s a curated list of free SEO tools I use in 2021:

Broken Link Finder

Looks like a cool one, it’s fast and it gives accurate results. In my case it pointed out my prefetch links as being 404, because they’re actually aliases. Good catch. I removed them immediately.

If you’re using WordPress, do this in your functions.php file:

function whiskey_setup() {
    // Remove WP 4.9+ dns-prefetch
    remove_action('wp_head', 'wp_resource_hints', 2);
add_action('after_setup_theme', 'whiskey_setup');

SEO Minion (Chrome extension)

SEO Minion helped me with on-page broken link checking. With my recent marketing lists where I had 100 links on one page, this tool was a life saver. Lots of the links were either expired or redirected.

Toptal’s Merge Words

I used this one to generate domain names when looking for expired domains. Instead of browsing thousands of expired domains, this tool gives you the exact domain names you’re looking for.

GTmetrix is always good when doing technical SEO. Read a comparison beteen GTmetrix and SpeedFactor (our in-house technical SEO tool).

Alexa’s Site Info

Alexa SiteInfo is also good for a quick overview. I mostly use it to find landing pages and keyword opportunities.

What’s My SERP

Very useful for daily tracking, I like the design and the UI/UX speed. I’m using it on a daily basis.

Doesn’t need any special introduction, and I really like the weekly site audit, the keyword tracking and the backlink opportunities. A real gold mine there.

Neil Patel’s Ubersuggest

I have (re)discovered this tool recently and it has some strong points. I used it during the free period with 5 sites and I got some good pointers.

Google Search Console

This one is truly underestimated and used by lots of these free tools. The only downside is the data organisation, but if you know what to look for, it’s a gold mine.

Pretty useful if you’re into squeezing every little bit of technical SEO. The comparison feature is good, and it’s probably based on all the sites they have checked over time.
